Using Drones for Video Production and Aerial Photography

“Drone” is a very popular buzzword these days. Delivery drones, attack drones, spy drones – but what about aerial photography drones? Many video production companies are investing in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), rather than expensive jibs or helicopters, to get some awesome overhead and bird’s-eye-view photos and videos. Photographers and videographers are no longer tied to the ground or stuck on ladders, dollies, and other equipment; multi-copters and drones make aerial videography a cost-effective means of capturing high-quality aerial footage.

While official regulations and the legality of flying drones in the private sector are still being settled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), many people are experimenting with aerial photography and videography with drones for personal use, as a hobby. Currently, the FAA usually permits citizens to fly hobbyist drones below 400 feet, and within the operator’s line of sight. The use of drones for video production is generally easier on large, private lots or rural areas.

A drone essentially turns a regular camera into a flying camera, which can shoot just about anything from any angle. This helps videographers see the scene from many different points of view, and helps capture unique perspectives with little effort, and less cost. Helicopters and other means of flight can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars per day, depending on fuel costs, rental or purchasing fees, hiring costs for pilots and crew members, and a number of other factors. A UAV can offer a similar perspective for under $5,000, and most people can learn how to pilot a drone in less than a day. Many hobbyists attach commercial-grade cameras or GoPros to the UAV and operate the drone via remote control, much like a remote-controlled car or toy helicopter.

Drones can be used for real estate marketing videos, to take aerial shots of homes, lots, and neighborhoods. They can also be used to market special locations and destinations for weddings, family outings, and corporate events. Many UAVs are already being used to film exciting sports videos, special events, and promotional videos.
