Video in the Classroom: How Video is Changing Education
The way we teach has evolved dramatically over the last several years. Classrooms can be found just about anywhere, thanks to modern technology. Mobile devices and video applications have made education accessible for anyone, anywhere, at any time. While video is still a relatively new addition to the traditional classroom, many schools are adopting video as an advanced teaching tool as well as a medium for more effective communication.
A recent report from Kaltura shows that video has been implemented into many educational applications, including remote learning, research, training, marketing, and community relations. According to the report, students are watching roughly 10 learning-based videos every month, and even more in schools where video is a more active part of the curriculum. Why is video becoming such an important teaching tool, and what value can be found from using video in the classroom?
According to Kaltura’s study, 90% of respondents believe video improves the learning experience. Even basic video tools can have a significant impact on a student’s education. More than half of the survey respondents are already incorporating video content into the curriculum, and most estimate that a typical student watches anywhere from 6 to 20 educational videos per month!
Video, for the most part, is being used in the classroom as a supplementary teaching aide. However, 65% of educational institutions are using video as part of a remote learning system. Video is also being used to promote and record student activities, school events, and staff and student communication.
Most seem to agree that video has a positive impact on education and increasing student satisfaction with the learning experience. Video is also making the admissions and on-boarding process of new students easier, attracting the right students and helping to demonstrate the culture and expectations of each individual school. “Flipped” classrooms, or classes which are taught through traditional methods as well as online video lectures, are cure to become a part of standard teaching practices in the near future.
