Where Does Creativity Start?
When I was a little kid growing up in Annapolis, Maryland, I would put on magic shows, perform dance routines while lip syncing to my favorite songs of the early 70’s. Surrounded by scenic views of the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay, attending Baltimore Colts games and loving people, it was there that my imagination began to take shape. There was the Naval Marine Corp Stadium and an outdoor theater that we would ride past sometimes to get home and I remember wondering what it would be like to be onstage or on the field looking up at all the fans. Fast forward to today and I am constantly on stadium fields and always creating a “stage” for my clients.
As I progress in my profession I am often asked how do I see the things that I see… How do I process the images in front of me? I share with them the emotion of what I see versus the visual side of what I see. In every environment, most of us use all of our senses to survive. The same goes for capturing important moments in life. You listen, you see, you smell and you feel everything around you. It’s much like viewing the scenic Severn River every time I would cross that bridge when I was a kid. I got good at absorbing my surroundings. I guess one could say that I’ve been practicing to do this my entire life.
I love being a fly on the wall, a silent observer. That’s when I feel as though I can do some of my best work. I’m motivated by my desire to capture the world around me and to articulate my unique view. I’m also drawn to technology, and in the last few years or so there have been enormous leaps and bounds. A videographer is no longer someone who just points a camera at something and presses “record.” We are craftsmen and storytellers. With the technology that’s available to me today, I’m able to create an end result that finally matches my vision, and resonates with others.
