Bi-Color 500 LED Video Light Review

As technology changes, it is hard to keep up with all the new gadgets and tools a videographer can have at his or her finger tips. This also relates to lighting.

Over the last 13 years, I have worked almost exclusively with Lowell lights. They fit my shooting style. They are light weight but durable, and compact, making it easy for travel. When lights are needed for a shoot, clients ask regularly, “where are all the lights.” I tell them “right in the black box.” They are amazed when I pull out the Lowell light kit, how many pieces are in there and how much light the kit provides. While these lights have been great, the down side is the heat they generate. This has been a problem with lighting since the beginning of movie making.

Recently, I had started to hear the buzz about LED lights. After getting the thumbs up from several friends in the video business, I decided to try one. I purchased a Bi-Color 500 LED Video Light. Similar to the Lowell, this too is light weight and seems very durable. The best part is that it gives off virtually no heat, so they are ideal for use in small confined areas where hot lights would quickly heat up the room. They are also convenient for faster striking. No waiting for lights to cool down.

The light itself has two groups of LED bulbs, and two pcs dimmers, one group of LED bulbs are 5600k, the other group of LED bulbs 3200K. Each dimmer controls one group of LED bulbs. When you use the control dimmer, the 5600K LED and 3200k LED will mix their color, making the color temperature adjustable.

The 500 LED uses 500 ultra bright LED’s, and has an equivalent output of 500 watts of incandescent light. I have found that this light offers a beautiful soft light.
When purchasing video equipment, price is always a factor. These lights are relatively inexpensive and fit within my budget.

I am very happy with this light and plan to add more to my inventory. I would recommend it to any videographer.
