What Parents Need to Know About the College Recruiting Timeline

Blog

Most families think recruiting starts junior year. By then, many coaches have already identified their targets. If you’re not on their radar by sophomore year, you’re behind.

We’ve produced over 1,500 recruiting highlight videos. Here’s the timeline we recommend based on what coaches have told us directly.

Freshman Year: Build the Foundation

Focus on playing. Get on competitive travel teams. Start attending showcases and tournaments where college scouts are present. You don’t need a highlight video yet, but you should be filming games. Even phone footage gives you raw material to work with later.

Keep your grades up. This matters more than most families realize. Coaches need athletes who are academically eligible.

Sophomore Year: Get Visible

This is when the recruiting video becomes important. Coaches are starting to build their watch lists for the class two years out. A professional 2 to 3 minute highlight reel gives them a reason to remember your athlete’s name.

Start reaching out to coaches. Email the highlight video link. Keep it short. Include the athlete’s name, position, GPA, graduation year, and the video link. That’s it. Coaches don’t read long emails.

Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you haven’t already.

Junior Year: Make Your Short List

By now, coaches who are interested will be in touch. Attend their camps. Visit campuses. Keep updating your highlight reel with new footage. The video you made sophomore year should be refreshed with current game film.

This is also when many families discover that Division III schools don’t offer athletic scholarships but DO offer academic aid and preferred admission. Don’t sleep on D3 programs. They can be a better fit academically and financially. We break down the differences in our guide to D1 vs D2 vs D3 recruiting videos.

Senior Year: Close the Deal

Official visits happen. Offers come in. If you’ve done the work in years 1 through 3, senior year is about choosing the right fit. If you’re just starting the process now, you’re competing against athletes who have been on coaches’ radars for two years.

The Video Makes the Difference

Coaches told us they review hundreds of recruiting profiles. The ones with professional video get a second look. The ones with shaky phone footage from the bleachers get skipped.

A recruiting highlight video costs a fraction of what you’d spend on a single year of travel ball. We lay out the exact numbers in our post on the real cost of a college recruiting video. It can save you tens of thousands of dollars in tuition if it helps your athlete land a scholarship or preferred admission.
